As
ever this has been a busy year for the Seniors; 35 events plus a new
competition with the Juniors and the Pairs Four Ball Knockout. The
weather for the first seven events was amazingly good for March/April but then
went rapidly downhill and two midsummer matches were postponed until October
.There were some very good matches with a high standard of golf
throughout and everyone enjoyed them ,especially the hospitality and
friendliness at the away fixtures. We were very proud to be hosts because
invariably our visiting teams heaped praise on the course and the welcome they
received from the Club. The Seniors Section
has a strong and growing membership, this year 92 active players. Seniors
like to play in matches and in the 26 matches 72
played in at least one. Always in golf most teams win their home matches and
our success was evenly spread; League
5 wins 5 losses
2 halves Tied
fourth from 7 teams in the Friendlies
4 wins 5 losses 3
halves Against
the Ladies over, two rounds held in March and October, the
Seniors prevailed to win the Kay Smeed
Trophy by 27 holes up. Individual
competitions attracted a good entry with 50 for the Captain's
Challenge and 70 for the Christmas
Stableford (The Don Whitby Trophy ). Not
only was the scoring good but there were lots of new names on the trophies. The Pairs
Knockout was won by Chris
Millard and Andy Cole .The inaugural Seniors
with Juniors event proved popular and was won by
Malcolm Large and Jack
Robson with an excellent 41pts. Outside
the Section, the Seniors distinguished themselves and the club with some
notable performances; Roger
Stevens won
the Ron Stanbrook
trophy for Reading and District
Seniors League players and Calcot
Seniors picked up the inaugural team trophy at this event. Nick
Parr won the Goring and Streatley Seniors Open. Ralph
Smith won The Mark Mundy Trophy David
Dailley won
the August Monday Medal with
a gross 75 off 12 handicap and Alex
Campbell led the entire Club on Pro's weekend with a nett 67. Sixty
five attended the Captain's Annual Dinner for section members and
their partners on 19th October. At
the AGM following the Christmas
Stableford Ron Bower this year's Captain introduced John
Smith Captain for 2008 who in turn announced David
Lowry as Vice Captain.
